Day of Caring cleans up county
09/13/2013 - By Amber Washington/reporter@trcle.com - Cleburne Times Review

The ninth annual United Way of Johnson County Day of Caring is on Saturday morning in neighborhoods across the county.

Each year, hundreds of volunteers give through service by teaming up with volunteer organizations or donating time as individuals. Past projects have included planting gardens, cleaning up overgrown yards, painting and building projects, such as wheelchair ramps, for homebound residents.

At 8 a.m., volunteers will gather at the United Way parking lot, 210 Featherstone in Cleburne, for registration, breakfast and a rally. At 8:30 a.m., volunteers will disperse to the project site of their choice and work until noon. Volunteers younger than 18 are required to have a permission slip signed by a legal guardian.

“It’s very important to the community to see that folks are willing to get out and give back to their communities,” said Dianne Packwood, United Way executive director.

Various county organizations, churches, youth groups and students plan to help out with this year’s activities, which include working in flower beds, landscaping, painting and helping Keep Cleburne Beautiful volunteers decorate the city for fall.

Residents with extra fall decorations are asked to donate them for city use at Cleburne City Hall, 10 N. Robinson St.

Packwood said most of the projects have been scheduled in Cleburne, and one is set up in Burleson. Those who need help with a project in other cities or who would like to volunteer are asked to call the United Way office at 817-645-9153.

Two new features to Day of Caring aim to give back to volunteers. The first is a free hot dog lunch at noon at the United Way building provided by employees with Newalta Environmental Services. Texas Health Resources will also have a mobile mammography bus on site from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. offering mammograms for uninsured women. Sign ups are required. To register or for more information, call 855-318-7696.
