CHRISTMAS IN ACTION Celebrates 15 Years
03/03/2015
Christmas in Action (CIA) celebrates their 15th year of refurbishing and providing emergency repairs for homeowners in the Cleburne community. The all-volunteer board has coordinated over 300 projects in the last 15 years. Some of the original board members still serve on the board. President, Paul Hinman, boasts the success of the Christmas in Action program is largely due to the great support received from our local businesses, churches, skilled contractors, and volunteers who support our projects throughout the years & every spring during the Community Volunteer Workday.
This year’s community Platinum sponsors are United Way of Johnson County and Wal-mart Distribution; Gold sponsors is the Heritage Assembly; Silver sponsors are Westhill Church of Christ, Colonial Savings, Woodmen of the World, Lowes, Friendship Circle Kings Daughters, Jerry Wheatley, Pinnacle Bank, DFW Waste Oil Services, P&P Plumbing, & Sachem. Bronze sponsors are Lone Star Ag Credit, First Christian Church, Marshall Young Insurance, Elks Lodge, & LDK properties. Skilled contractors donating a portion of their services include Dugger Electric, Bert Morrison Electric, Layland Plumbing, P&P Plumbing, Torres Boren Roofing, Stevan Buren Roofing, Parker Tree Service, Philip Hightower Remodeling, and Jeremy Collins Leveling.
CIA began working on 9 projects in February this year, with electricians, roofers, and plumbers stepping in to perform much needed repairs to leaking gas lines and electrical hazards. Secretary, Teresa Richardson states, “It is nice to repair the outside of a house…paint it, spruce up the yard. But if you’re not eliminating the electrical hazards within the home, or repairing gas leaks that not only threatens the homeowners but possibly the entire neighborhood, how have you made that homeowner safer?”
The City of Cleburne’s Community Power Revitalization program ask that various non-profit agencies come together to support each other’s efforts. Christmas in Action is sharing this year’s volunteer work day with 6Stones Ministries on March 27th & 28th. Richardson said, “Both CIA & 6Stones have the heart for revitalizing and making our homes safer within the community. We are excited that 6Stones is partnering with CIA this year which has allowed us to take on 9 projects rather than the usual 5-6.”
Several churches, businesses, and organizations have committed to one of the 9 projects shared by the two groups. To volunteer on a home repair project, contact either Teresa Richardson (CIA) at (817)774-6316 or Landon Ledlow (6Stones) at (972)-342-8800, to be assigned to a project. House sponsorships and donations for supplies and materials are still needed by both groups. The community blitz is scheduled for March 27th & 28th (Friday & Saturday) and all volunteers are asked to register at Caddo Street Grill, 211 S Caddo, Cleburne at 8 am.
